bienfaits de l’hydrolat de rose de Damas

In Morocco, rhassoul face & hair masks are often mixed with Damascus rose hydrosol for its wonderful properties. The little extra? It brings a sweet smell of rose to your homemade cosmetics.

It refreshes, soothes and softens the skin. It is suitable for delicate skins, prone to redness, eczema, itching and allergies. It gives a more luminous aspect to the skin!

Damask rose hydrosol has an anti-inflammatory effect. Moreover, it soothes irritated and tight skins as well as the delicate skin of the eyes and around the eyes.

Here is the complete list of its benefits for the skin:

How to use it:

  • By vaporization on the face,
  • In your cosmetic preparations (masks, gels, two-phase make-up remover …).

A bit of history on the rose water

The picking of the Damask rose is generally done from April to May.

In the first place, in order to preserve their properties, the picking is done by hand, flower by flower.

Our partner cooperative carries it out at an altitude of nearly 1500 meters, in the Dades valley. According to an ancestral know-how, it is done at dawn, so the heat does not make the delicate essence disappear. The picked petals are distilled with spring water to obtain the precious rose hydrosol, rich in active molecules.

Our partner cooperative carries out all the steps to extract the precious floral water of Damask rose: cultivation, selection and distillation.

Beware of scams !

It should be noted that rose hydrosol is often mixed with additives. Thus, we advise you to check the list of ingredients because we find many floral waters of roses (and not only) mixed with conservators (organic, natural or not). However, a quality Damask rose hydrosol does not need any conservators, like ours.

Difference between organic and natural cosmetics?

We must differentiate between organic & natural cosmetics. Natural cosmetics contain natural ingredients but may also contain synthetic ingredients. It may also contain ingredients not authorized by the organic cosmetic charters. Thus, a natural product may contain 95% of natural ingredients but 5% of controversial ingredients such as phenoxyethanol or parabens, silicones or PEGs.

An organic cosmetic is by definition a cosmetic made of natural ingredients to which a minimum percentage of ingredients grown according to the principles of organic agriculture is imposed. This percentage may change from one certification to another and the charters are more or less strict. An organic cosmetic is therefore a natural cosmetic, which goes even further in the search for naturalness with the integration of organic ingredients in its composition.

Apart from the composition, organic cosmetics favors as much as possible a manufacturing method that respects humans & the environment: dangerous and polluting ingredients are banned. In terms of ecology, organic cosmetics will not use non-renewable resources such as petroleum (and plastic derivatives) to create its products.

Organic cosmetics = more “real” for the consumer

The standards of the organic cosmetic charters being stricter than in natural cosmetics, and even more so than in conventional cosmetics, the manufacturers of organic cosmetics focus on useful ingredients. You will often find in organic cosmetic products vegetable oils, plant extracts, essential oils, or hydrosols.

When a conventional cosmetic uses water in its formulations, an organic cosmetic generally uses hydrosol. Also, when a conventional cosmetic uses petroleum derivatives to form a protective film on the skin (silicones, mineral oils such as kerosene), an organic cosmetic uses natural ingredients more useful for the skin: vegetable butters and oils, beeswax or vegetable wax, aloe vera gel. Thus, the ingredients used in organic cosmetics are more expensive but with more benefits for the skin.

In conventional cosmetics, emulsifiers (which bind the aqueous phase and the oily phase together) are generally PEG (extremely polluting plastic derivatives). On the other hand, in organic cosmetics, emulsifiers are of natural and vegetable origin (sugar esters for example).

Organic cosmetics without any labels?

With the advent of organic cosmetics in recent years, greenwashing is becoming more and more present. Many brands do not hesitate to play on words, even if it means confusing the consumers. To make your choice, we advise you to trust the many certifying labels that exist.

At Ayda, we have several certifications :

  • Cosmos Organic and Slow Cosmetics for all our products
  • Nature & Progrès for our soaps and solid shampoos

As a certified brand, we offer you the best possible products, associated with the know-how of French cosmetics. We guarantee this thanks to the recurrent controls of our entire production chain carried out by independent and qualified auditors. Thus, the auditors control the packaging unit, the producers of the ingredients used, the packaging elements and also the labeling. In addition, we participate in the development of the organic farming sector.

List of organic labels to trust

Each certifier has its own charter and its own specifications. For example, there may be differences in the minimum percentage of natural and organic ingredients. Also, the manufacturing methods or the list of non-authorized ingredients are different between the charters.

The two most famous certifiers are Ecocert and Cosmecert. For example, most of our products (such as prickly pear oil) are certified by Ecocert.

In addition, to obtain the Cosmos organic label, the product must contain at least 95% natural ingredients or ingredients of natural origin (water and minerals are considered natural). Also, the cosmetic product must contain at least :

  • 95% of plant-based ingredients from Organic Agriculture
  • 20% of the total ingredients from Organic Agriculture (excluding water and minerals, which are not certifiable) and 10% for rinse-off products

For the rest, there are other French labels, with other requirements and specificities.

Other organic labels & mentions

The Slow Cosmetics label, for example, is based on 4 pillars, which go beyond the composition of the product. In its charter, it also has a list of prohibited ingredients. But it will also focus on the ethics of the brand and its marketing practices.

The Nature & Progrès label has the strictest specifications.

100% of the plant-based ingredients must be organic and the cosmetic must contain a minimum of 95% of ingredients of natural origin. The cosmetics must not contain ingredients of synthetic origin or synthetic colorants. Also, they must not contain ingredients from petrochemicals, palm oil and derivatives.

There are also other labels in Europe: BDIH (Germany), Natrue (Germany), Soil association (United Kingdom). But also in the United States : USDA organic.

Good to know : A certified organic cosmetic product may contain up to 5% of ingredients of synthetic origin, depending on the label. That is to say obtained by transformation. These ingredients are not harmful. They must be part of the ingredients authorized in the specifications of the certifying bodies.

Exploring Solid Shampoo: Everything You Need to Know

What is a solid shampoo?

A solid shampoo has the same functionality as a liquid shampoo: wash the hair and leave it clean. It comes in solid form, like a soap, and must be wetted and rubbed on the scalp (or hands) to produce foam.

In both cases, whether solid or liquid, shampoo contains one or more surfactants that allow the product to foam and clean the hair by catching the particles and carrying them away in the water when rinsed.

What is a solid shampoo made of?

One or more surfactants as mentioned earlier, but also powders, water or hydrosol, active ingredients and sometimes essential oils. A solid shampoo allows to wash the hair, and can be adapted to all types of hair. But it can also correspond to such or such type of hair by its composition.

Tout savoir sur les shampoings solides

The most common surfactants in solid shampoos

  • SCI: Sodium cocoyl isethionate (used by itself for a thin foam or associated to SCS to soften it)
  • SCS: Sodium coco sulfate (strong foaming power)
  • SLSA: Sodium lauryl sulfoacetate
  • SLMI: Sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate (gentler than other surfactants)

SLMI has a better biodegradability than other surfactants. The fact that the surfactant disintegrates properly in water and soils was a major concern for us at Ayda. That’s why we wanted to take up the challenge of offering a solid shampoo without any surfactant. Yes, without any surfactant! But how is this possible?

Washing hair with soap

Did you know that you could wash your hair with cold-saponified soap? Soap naturally produces foam, without adding surfactants. Soap is a surfactant by itself, but a 100% biodegradable surfactant due to its composition. This is why we have chosen to offer you a “soap” shampoo rather than a solid shampoo with surfactant. It is much gentler on the scalp and more easily biodegradable for the environment.

Our soap shampoos contain classic soap-making ingredients (olive oil, castor oil, babassu oil), but also the precious argan oil to nourish the hair and rhassoul which contains natural saponins. Saponins enable you to gently wash the hair, and rhassoul is often used for the “no poo” method, the famous no-shampoo shampoos.

shampoing solide cheveux normaux

Cold-saponified soaps have a basic pH, unlike liquid shampoos which have an acidic pH. However, it is this acidity that the hair needs to close the scales and facilitate styling. As with solid shampoos, it is therefore advisable to use an acid solution to naturally close the scales and rebalance the pH of the hair after washing hair with a shampoo soap. The recipe is just below!

Tout savoir sur le shampoing solide

Recipe for a solution to balance the pH of solid shampoo

Mix in a bottle:

  • 10 ml of cider vinegar
  • 200 ml of water

After rinsing your hair one last time, pour this preparation on your hair without rinsing. Your hair will be smoother, more disciplined, brighter & softer. Unlike what you might think, vinegar has no negative effect on your hair. It does not attack or damage it. On the contrary, its pH is close to the natural pH of the hair. For this reason, it is important to respect the recommended doses here: 1 dose of cider vinegar for 20 doses of water.

The more water there is, the more this vinegar solution will be suitable for frequent use. Here, the dosages are suitable for washing hair twice a week. And don’t worry, the vinegar smell will leave after a few minutes.

The transition from liquid to solid shampoo

The transition from liquid shampoo to solid or soap shampoo can be a little tricky, just like the transition from conventional to organic shampoo can be. Your first attempts may not be successful: dry hair, tangled, etc. Ideally, it is important to analyze the composition of a solid shampoo before testing it. If you have a sensitive scalp, it is best to avoid SCS and SLSA and opt for SCI and SLMI surfactants, or even opt for a soap shampoo.

Soothing Your Skin Naturally: Remedies for Eczema

Whether it is atopic eczema or contact eczema, the itching can have harmful effects on the skin, besides being unpleasant. The more it itches, the more we scratch, the more the skin is attacked, and the more lesions can appear. It is an infernal cycle!

After having tried everything, one can be tempted to look at chemical products to cure eczema. However, there are many natural tricks to soothe it and reduce its intensity.

What is the cause of eczema?

Eczema can be genetic or can depend on external factors such as allergies or stress. Eczema manifests itself in the form of red patches, dry skin, intensely peeling & itching skin. Eczematous skin is sensitive and is easily attacked by external elements. So it is necessary to take care of it much more gently and patiently. It can affect adults, children and even newborns.

Soothe the skin and eczema

Luckily, there are some natural tricks to soothe itchy skin, starting with the so-called emollient ingredients. An emollient ingredient will soften and smooth the skin, making it much more comfortable. In natural cosmetics, you can count on the following emollients:

  • Aloe vera gel: soothing, repairing, hydrating & regenerating. It gently moisturizes, calms itching and soothes the skin thanks to its freshness.

gel aloe vera bio

organic aloe vera gel

  • Oat: and more specifically oatmeal. Perhaps you have already seen “green moms” putting oatmeal in their babies’ bath to soothe their eczema? It is a very gentle ingredient that is suitable for babies, but also for adults to gently soothe their eczema. To use it, you just have to pour it in the bath (in powder if possible) or to leave it for 10 minutes in boiling water to obtain a kind of cream to apply on the skin once cooled.

  • True lavender hydrosol: soothing and healing, this hydrosol is known to calm and accelerate the regeneration of skin cells.

  • Roman chamomile hydrosol: soothing, it relieves the delicate skins without attacking them.

Nourish and strengthen the skin

Your skin also needs good nutrition. And for that, nothing better than plant-based butters and oils:

  • Calendula macerate: soothing, regenerating and healing, it repairs the skin and helps it heal deeply. Anti-inflammatory, it durably soothes sensitive & eczematous skins.

  • Prickly pear seed oil *: rich in essential fatty acids, it also contains omega 6 which helps skin repair and fights against dehydration, one of the enemies of eczematous skin.

  • Shea butter: known to relieve irritation and tightness, it can be a good alternative for soothing eczema. However, it may not be suitable for people allergic to latex because it contains a small amount.

  • Cupuaçu butter: perfect for dehydrated skin, it is helpful if you are allergic to shea butter since it does not contain latex.

  • Sweet almond oil: soothing and anti-inflammatory, sweet almond oil is one of the gentlest oils for skincare. It is also the oil that is recommended for taking care of babies skin, that’s how soft it is!

* Many of our clients have told us that their eczema has decreased after using our prickly pear oil. In addition to the omega 6, we note the presence of sterols that help preserve the hydrolipidic film of the skin. It is therefore not surprising that its use also has a beneficial effect at this level!

Eczéma : remèdes naturels

Adopt a softer hygiene

Eczematous skin does not need more aggression… It already has enough reasons to get inflamed!

Therefore, prefer a cold-saponified soap, enriched with vegetable butters, vegetable oils and natural vegetable glycerin. Choose superfatted soaps (8 to 10% of superfatting). Forget shower gels because they tend to dry out the skin. Favor lukewarm showers to avoid drying and damaging the skin. And above all, space out your showers, the more you wash yourself, the more your skin is “attacked”.

For laundry, choose a perfume-free washing powder, as natural as possible. If you regularly have eczema on your hands, it may be due to the use of chemical household products. Therefore, choose natural cleaning products!

When it comes to food, it is better to limit dairy and to drink plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated. Avoid inflammatory foods (sugar in general, processed foods, gluten, saturated fatty acids, coffee).

Calm your mind

While eczema can be genetic, or due to the skin that is very sensitive to external aggressions, eczema can also come from within. Try to adopt routines that calm your mind. Stress, fatigue, lack of sleep & frustration are not your friends. You must therefore try to calm your mind permanently. You can help yourself with essential oils by diffusing it in the air or breathing it in from the bottle.

The relaxing effect of essential oils on the mind

Did you know that the components of your cosmetics could have a positive effect on your well-being ? Particularly when they contain essential oils ! Essential oils have many benefits on your health, skin but also your mind, when they have been carefully selected. Essential oils can thus relax and relieve stress.

When applied on the skin, essential oils will pass through your body to help you relax, and will have a positive effect directly within your skin tissues. To get even more benefits from essential oils, you can inhale your skincare products when applying them on your skin. Instead of applying your products as usual, without thinking about it, rub your hands together with a few drops of product.

Cup your hands below your nose and inhale the relaxing essential oils.

When a skincare product contains essential oils, its molecules will lift up your nose and soothe your mind. This is why we add essential oils to our products whenever it’s possible. Our anti-aging face serum for example, contains neroli essential oil while our waterless and moisturizing face cream contains ylang ylang essential oil and jasmine absolute.

Crafting an Anti-Aging Routine with just 4 Key Ingredients

Mature skin, (first) wrinkles, fine lines, dull complexion, dehydrated skin or sagging skin… The effects of time are not kind to us and often reflect our age. But no panic ! When using the right products and doing the right things, you will be able to fight against age signs.

Did you know ? It is not only the time passing that determines the soupleness and tonicity of the skin, but also its visual aspect. There can be many factors as : genetics, hormones, lifestyle, sun exposure, etc…

Why use anti-ageing products in one’s routine?

The first signs of ageing usually appear around the age of 30. We often advise to start applying anti-ageing skincare products at the age of 25. It is from that moment that collagen production lowers down.

But the real signs of skin maturity appear around menopause. The hormones drop linked to this specific time leads to skin dehydration and a loss of firmness. The face oval is less maintained and wrinkles and brown spots might appear. But again, no panic ! You can limit the ageing signs adopting skin routine “saviors”.

Besides from adopting a healthy lifestyle as soon as possible (food, hydration, sleep, physical activity, limit alcohol consumption and smoking, etc) you can choose to have a natural anti-ageing routine with adapted skincare products and most of all….organic. You can then forget silicones that will hide ageing effects without treating them. What is important is to take care of your skin effectively and sustainably.

Routine anti-âge naturelle

Natural and anti-ageing ingredients and products

In the domain of organic cosmetics there are a lot of ingredients that enable fighting efficiently against ageing signs. Among them, prickly pear seed oil, argan oil, musk rose oil, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, retinol, vegetable collagen but also coenzyme Q10. There are many ingredients of natural origin to fight against skin ageing !

But what is an anti-ageing ingredient?

An anti-ageing ingredient is intended to limit the signs of skin ageing. It reduces wrinkles, fine lines, brown spots, the loss of radiance, elasticity but also skin dehydration. Anti-ageing products that contain this type of ingredients can be used to prevent or to treat these issues.

Let’s have a look at the most renowned natural anti-ageing ingredients !

Argan oil

Argan oil nourishes, protects and revitalises the skin. It is rich in vitamin E (antioxidant) and in sterols (which stimulate cell membranes). Rich in essential fatty acids, it has high levels of omegas 6 and 9. Omegas 9 are good for skin elasticity and prevent skin premature ageing while omegas 6 diminish skin water loss.

➔ Musk rose oil

Musk rose oil, also known as rosa mosqueta oil, enables cell regeneration and improves skin suppleness and elasticity. It improves collagen synthesis, protects the skin from free radicals and helps preventing wrinkles. It also has positive benefits on brown spots.

Prickly pear seed oil

Prickly pear seed oil has many benefits for the skin. Its richness in vitamin E, omega-6 and sterols enables this oil to be the perfect ingredient to fight against free radicals, responsible for skin aging. The concentration of sterols is much higher than the one in argan oil, which is also recommended to prevent skin aging. Its high concentration of omega-6 helps prickly pear seed oil effectively fight against skin dehydration.

➔ Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1000 times its weight of water, which shows its super hydrating power ! It is naturally present in our skin, but its concentration lowers drastically over time. It helps maintain the hydration, elasticity and suppleness of the skin, while plumping it and giving it a smoother appearance. Indeed, it does the same as a sponge would do. Hyaluronic acid also stimulates collagen production and skin cells’ renewal.

Prevent ageing by cleansing the skin

It’s important to have a gentle and effective daily skincare routine. Cleansing the skin, using a tonic and applying nourishing treatments will be the perfect routine to naturally fight against ageing !

In order to prepare your skin, the first step is to clean it properly. A skin cleaned on a regular basis will naturally look better. Even if you don’t wear makeup, the pollution, sweat, and impurities that accumulate during the day will not be “great” for your skin.

You can start removing your makeup with vegetable oil and floral water, massaging your face with your fingers. Then clean your skin with a gentle cleanser, such as cold processed soap, which is enriched with nourishing and anti-aging active ingredients (argan oil for example). Apply the soap on your face, rinse with clean water, and dry smoothly with a clean towel. These natural products are great for cleansing the skin softly.

After your skin is clean and dry, apply some toner or floral water to tighten pores. Rose water and orange blossom water are particularly recommended for mature skin. Rose flower water not only smells super good, but it is also known to fight skin aging.

Routine anti age naturelle

Nourish mature skin with organic products

After cleansing, it’s time to nourish and hydrate your skin. The face of course, but also the neckline and neck, often forgotten, but which also require great attention and care.

Apply an organic anti-aging serum by rubbing a few drops between your hands. “Heating” the product will help it better penetrate the skin. We advise you to massage your skin for a few minutes to stimulate microcirculation. You may be interested in our anti-aging organic face serum enriched with prickly pear seed oil and raspberry seed oil. The latter is rich in omega 3 and antioxidants, perfect for fighting skin ageing !

Hydrate mature skin with organic products

To finish your skincare routine, apply a nutshell of our organic face cream. It does not contain water. It is actually composed of aloe vera juice and rose flower water, which hydrate the skin deeply. Most face creams contain at least 70% water, but water does not contain active ingredients. The water contained in face creams is used to obtain an emulsion between the different ingredients and provides a creamy texture to the final product. But we decided to use aloe vera juice and rose flower water instead. Our organic face cream has then a higher concentration of active ingredients than a classic face cream has.

Unlocking 5 Rhassoul Benefits for Your Skin and Hair

What is rhassoul?

Rich in essential nutrients and minerals, Rhassoul benefits are large for hair and skin. Also called ghassoul, rhassoul is a volcanic Moroccan clay that has been used since a long time by women in Morocco. Rhassoul powder is an essential part of the hammam ritual! It is used as a multi-purpose treatment : on hair, on the body and on the face. In Morocco, it is often mixed with rose water, orange flower water, argan oil or essential oils. Indeed, it has many properties for skin and hair.

The 5 rhassoul benefits and properties

Rhassoul powder contains a large amount of natural saponins. Saponins have gentle but effective cleansing properties. Unlike some soaps and shampoos, it does not pollute groundwater because it is not composed of any surfactant, only natural saponins. Moroccan clay is very gentle to the hydrolipidic film of the skin and scalp and absorbs impurities without irritating.

List of the 5 rhassoul benefits and properties:

  • it makes the skin soft
  • gently purifies (scalp and skin)
  • It makes hair silky and shiny
  • regulates sebum excess
  • It brings volume to the hair

rhassoul visage cheveux bienfaits

How to use rhassoul on hair?

Fun fact : rhassoul can replace your usual shampoo! This is called the no poo technique (no shampoo). It helps get rid of impurities and absorb sebum excess. It does not contain surfactants. On the other hand, it contains natural saponins that are gentle with sebaceous glands. Did you know they were responsible for the production of sebum?

Rhassoul, for which type of hair?

Rhassoul can be used by all hair types but it is recommended for hair that need volume, normal to oily hair, but also scalps that are irritated or prone to dandruff. It helps wash less regularly your hair, and has a regulatory role on sebaceous glands: either by preventing your scalp from producing too much sebum, or by stimulating these glands so that they produce a sufficient quantity of sebum to “nourish” dry hair.

Now that you know the many benefits of rhassoul for hair, let’s see how to use it ! Rhassoul can be used on wet hair and applied to the roots. To do so, you just need to mix it with a bit of cold water or flower water, and a bit of vegetable oil like argan oil. Important: in order to keep the natural absorbent properties of rhassoul, be careful not to use a metal container or utensil. Prefer stainless steel, glass, wood or ceramic.

Quick recipe for using rhassoul on hair: Mix 2 tablespoons of rhassoul, 1/2 teaspoon of argan oil and a bit of cold water. Stir until you obtain a smooth and homogeneous mixture. Apply on wet hair with your fingers, insisting on the roots.

If your hair lacks moisture, you can turn your rhassoul shampoo into a mask by adding moisturizing ingredients like vegetable glycerin, soy yogurt or aloe vera gel to your preparation.

Rhassoul hair mask

In a bowl, pour and mix:

  • 2 tablespoons of rhassoul
  • 1 teaspoon of oil of your choice (argan, coconut or jojoba oil)
  • 1 teaspoon of aloe vera gel
  • a few drops of essential oil (check their properties and precautions before use)
  • 2 tablespoons of mineral water or rose water

Leave this mask on your scalp for 5 to 10 minutes, and rinse with water.

How to use rhassoul on the face?

Naturally rich in minerals (magnesium, iron, sodium, zinc, phosphorus, etc.), rhassoul can be used in face masks. It will gently remove impurities and sebum excess, while cleansing and detoxifying the skin. It is so gentle that it can also be used around the eyes.

For which skin types can rhassoul be beneficial?

It can be used on all skin types. But it is especially recommended in case of impurities, pimples and blackheads. If you want to purify your skin and tighten your pores, this is the clay your skin needs! Rhassoul is also particularly appreciated by combination to oily skin and acne-prone skin. Naturally gentle, it cleanses without irritating the sebaceous glands. It can thus be used by sensitive and reactive ski.

For a soft and purified skin, mix in a bowl:

  • 1 tablespoon of rhassoul powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of oil of your choice (argan or jojoba)
  • 2 teaspoons of mineral water or organic rose water

Mix until you get a texture that is easy to apply on the face. If needed, add water or clay to your mixture. Apply this mask in circular movements on your face and leave it for 10 to 15 minutes. Do not let the mask dry completely, as this may remove too much sebum from your skin (which needs a minimum of sebum). Rinse off gently with water and apply your usual oil or moisturizer. Note: your rhassoul mask can be kept up to 48 hours in the refrigerator, but it is rather advised to use it after preparing it.

rhassoul en poudre ayda

Ayda natural rhassoul powder (picture: blog the green blossom)

Focus on Ayda’s rhassoul powder

Since we released our rhassoul powder, the comment that comes up most often is that it is very thin. The fact that it is an ultra-fine powder allows it to be better mixed with other ingredients. It thus gives more homogeneous textures and it is more pleasant to apply, especially on the face. We are often told that it is of very good quality, like all our other products of course ;)

But what makes it different from other rhassoul powders? First, it is packaged in a glass jar. In addition to being ecological, this packaging helps preserve all of its properties and qualities. Then, it is ultra-thin, which makes it a very pleasant powder to apply. The quality of our rhassoul clay powder lies in its selection : it is extracted in the Boulemane region in Morocco, on the edge of the Middle Atlas, about 200 kilometers from the city of Fez.

First dried under the sun, the clay extracted from rhassoul quarries is cleaned with water and then filtered, in order to remove impurities. The last operation is to dry it again and to transform the rhassoul clay into an ultra-fine powder. It is the know-how in drying and sieving rhassoul powder that determines its quality.

What are the benefits of aloe vera gel? How to use it?

Aloe vera is a succulent plant composed of an hydrating pulp (up to 98% of water!) This plant was already present in the ancient medecine treaties for its benefits in medicinal (burns and scars) and cosmetic care. We actually chose to use this plant in our organic face cream, instead of water, which is usually used in skincare products.

Aloe vera gel is the star ingredient of natural cosmetics : its properties have many benefits on skin and hair. You can have a look at the way to use aloe vera gel on face and hair in the corresponding parts of this article. Aloe vera gel can be used in different ways, on the face as a serum, a cream, an under eye treatment, but also as an after-sun gel or an hydrating treatment for hair.

Note : it is important to have a look at its components if you buy it as an ingredient. Some aloe vera gels are made of water and dehydrated powder (leaf powder). Dehydrated leaf powder has less benefits and less nutrients. Real aloe vera gel can be found under the name of “Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice“.

Firstly, prickly pear is a fruity juice with many seeds. It can be yellow, orange, red and even green colored depending on where the fig tree is located. This cactus comes from Latin America, Mexico, which proudly bears a fig tree and an eagle on its flag. Therefore, it can also be found in the Mediterranean region (Italy, Sardinia, Spain, Corsica), North Africa (of which Maghreb) and South Africa. The seeds hidden in the figs are the guarded secret of this beauty potion…

Therefore, it’s a precious fig oil, this is why its price can be quite surprising at first glance.

Why is it so precious ? Because of its yield : to extract just one liter of oil, we almost need one tonne of figs. If you come across low priced prickly pear seed oils, it might mean that it’s not 100% pure oil. It might be mixed with other less expensive vegetable oils.

Don’t forget to check if the INCI list has the following ingredients : Opuntia ficus indica (latin name), Opuntia ficus indica seed oil (latin/english) or Prickly pear (english).

Prickly pear seed oil and prickly pear oil extract are two different things

You can come across prickly pear oil extract which is nothing more than the maceration of prickly pear flowers in vegetable oil. The maceration will contain less active ingredients than cold-pressed prickly pear seeds. How to recognize it ? First of all, the name of the product has to indicate if it’s pure oil or an oil extract. Seeds often macerate in sunflower oil, which you can easily recognize with the name “Helianthus annuus seed oil”.

How it is made?

Finally, you are eager to know how this magic oil is made? You will find here its production secret. Fig trees grow in arid countries, such as Morocco. To obtain this precious oil, we pick the prickly pear fruits to extract their seeds. The production process of this oil is rare and precious, so is prickly pear seed oil ! To extract 1 liter of oil, we need almost 30 kilos of seeds, contained in 1 tonne of figs. Each seed contains more or less 5% of pure oil.

To obtain this precious oil, there is first a meticulous picking process. Maybe you’ve spotted the spines around the fruit ? They make workers’ task harder, and slow the process of seed extraction. It is thanks to the know-how of our moroccan women’s cooperative that we obtain the precious seeds. They pick with care the figs that they open to extract the seeds.

The seeds are then washed and dried under the sun, before being cold-pressed. At Ayda, organic prickly pear seed oil is made from generation to generation by our women’s cooperative partners. It is in the heart of south Morocco, that we collect an exceptional and organic prickly pear oil extract from seeds. We guarantee you a slow extraction to obtain a 100% pure and natural oil. Actually, an oil of high quality is generally green or yellow and its smell is more or less notable.

To preserve its cosmetic properties, we pack our oil in glass bottles.
